Everyone knows the basic items necessary to any kitchen remodel: cabinets, countertop, appliances, backsplash, etc. You’ll probably want to consider new flooring, a fresh coat of paint, and maybe even new furniture.

These things might not immediately come to mind when you’re remodeling, but that doesn’t make them any less important to your kitchen design.  Storage, lighting, and functionality are critical when creating a kitchen space as well. 1. Kitchen Island and Bar Stools

The kitchen is the home’s central gathering space, and it is most likely the area where families spend the majority of their time. Even though many meals are enjoyed at the table, a central island with a few bar stools is the perfect spot for a bowl of cereal or a midday snack. When family or friends stop by, the island adds a few extra seats without having to lug out the folding chairs.

2. Deep Sinks

A deep sink allows you to easily wash and prep a large number of dishes at once. If you have a double sink, then you can wash in one side and soak in the other. A single tub allows you to wash larger items like platters and cookie sheets with ease.

3. Smart Storage

Work with a designer to incorporate storage solutions that are built into the pantry and cabinetry. Roll-out drawers, hooks, cork board, shelf risers, Lazy Susans, and custom-designed areas for appliances like the mixer and blender are a few ideas.

4. Outdoor Access

A kitchen with access to outdoor space, like a deck or patio, is great for entertaining. If possible, make sure to include a slider or French doors into your design.

5. Kitchen Cabinet Light Fixtures

Installed under or on top of the cabinets, lighting provides a special ambiance in the kitchen. Under-cabinet lighting also makes it easier to see what you’re working on. This is a great way to illuminate dark corners as well.
